Frequently Asked Questions

  1. 01.
What kinds of projects can I work on?

As a Research Affiliate, you have the option to work on an Exhibit or a Research Question.

    • Exhibits focus on translating ocean science into visual, interactive, and accessible experiences.
    • Research Projects focus on answering a clear question through data, methods, and reproducible analysis.

You can find a more comprehensive description of the standards here:

  2. 02.
What can I expect during the cohort?

We're still actively working on this documentation, but you're welcome to see what we've put together so far. Feel free to check out the planning documents , which will remain publicly at least through the end of the cohort.

However, if you can't find what you're looking for, we really encourage you to join the Slack Channel and ask someone on the team!

What is your stance on using AI to complete projects?

Transparency is a core value for our team, including when it comes to AI. This website was built with AI assistance, and AI tools are used throughout program operations. The bigger accountability questions sit with the companies developing these tools, but that doesn't make using AI uncomplicated.

In a nutshell, MOS is pro-AI but anti-slop. Rather than avoiding AI outright, we are choosing to maintain a clear-eyed sense of when it actually helps and when it undermines your credibility or craft. That question sits at the heart of good science communication, and it's one Research Affiliates are encouraged to bring into their own work and to MOS.
